How Sense listens

For each protocol, how Bhairava Sense hears it and what the site provides, easiest and least intrusive first.

107 protocols in six groups, easiest and least intrusive first. 76 of them are listen-only in every setup.

Listen-only: Sense only hears, and sends nothing to the equipment. Speaks by itself: the equipment reports without being asked. Needs a key: the traffic is protected and the site provides its key.

1Nothing to install

Sense hears these through the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or network connection it already has. The site provides nothing.

    2Plug in a small receiver

The site plugs in one small radio receiver, within range of the sensors. Sense is listen-only.

      3A setting by site IT

Site IT makes one change: a mirror port on the switch, forwarding from a gateway, or the address of the device. Nothing is added to the equipment.

        4Wiring onto a line

A receive-only connection is wired onto the serial line or bus. Sense is listen-only there and never transmits.

          5The maker’s bus interface

The bus is reached through the interface its maker provides. Sense listens through it.

            6Devices re-pointed, or Sense asks

These devices send to a server elsewhere, or speak only when asked. The site points them at Sense, or allows Sense to ask.

              Two more routes

              A network session

Some equipment, such as weighing terminals, gives its readings over a network session such as Telnet. Sense opens the session and reads what the terminal sends. The site provides the terminal’s address, and a login where one is set.

A serial line through a converter box

Where a serial line already reaches the network through a converter box, Sense connects to the box and is listen-only. Nothing is wired onto the line.

              Protocols

Every protocol Sense knows, with its support status.
